She is the daughter of Harvey Welker a Native American father and Julie Welker an African-American mother. Her mother works as a real estate agent and her father is an engineer. Walker graduated from Germantown Friends School situated within Philadelphia's Germantown district in the year 1994. She attended Harvard College, where she earned a Bachelors of Arts degree. Welker married John Hughes in Philadelphia, who was an acclaimed marketing director. They have two daughters. The couple began in 2014 having an affair.
